Pirate ship play area for coastal village

Holiday Park Innovation Show blog post 1

Following the success of designing a nautical themed play area in the Cornish town of Truro, Russell Play was invited to design a similar themed park in the nearby coastal village of Flushing.

The unique design reflects many aspects of Flushing’s past and its coastal location. The blue rubber surface with sand coloured areas suggests the sea, with sandbanks and islands. The large pirate ship, ‘The Flushing Flagship’, is a reference to the Cornish coast’s association with smuggling. It provides a multitude of play activities including climbing, balancing and sliding as well as imaginative play. There are porthole windows, an upper-deck complete with helm and a ‘rigging’ rope net that leads up to the ‘crow’s nest’ on the ship’s mast.

On the ‘islands’ children can have on-shore adventures too playing with the swings, a bridge and tunnel and a playhouse, the ‘Strawbuckie Crab Shack’. This is a reference to Flushing’s fishing industry and a ‘Strawbuckie’ is the name given to a Flushing native. There are also two springies of a clown fish and a whale.

The play equipment is made using the versatile Spielart robinia timber range which harmonises with the natural environment and is perfect for theming.

Come and visit us at stand 424, at the show, to see how a well designed play area can enhance the attraction of your business.
